About The Woollen Shroud Company
The Woollen Shroud Company is simply what it says – shrouds made from wool.
It has been shaped by my personal relationship over 20+ years, with sheep’s fleece. I admire its natural properties of sustainability, biodegradable abilities and, living in rural Scotland, a locally available resource. The woollen fabric used in the shrouds are from Scottish produced tweeds and UK manufactured felted wool.
When it came to planning my own funeral and starting the conversation with those I believed to be interested in my wishes, I was determined to follow greener practices than generations gone before. The rituals followed may be similar but the ‘ingredients’ were going to be different. One of the obstacles to overcome was my desire to ensure that all going into the ground would become part of the earth and not leach pollutants into the soil and to that end, I wanted to be wrapped in a woollen shroud. The easy and obvious solution was to design and make my own. So I did. Then I made another, for a friend and another, and another for a relation.
The growing movement across the funeral profession and the desire for more family – centric funerals needs support. One area is to raise awareness of natural burials as an alternative choice and the coming together of like minded providers can help support this. Another area is the actual availability of products to support greener practices and to offer a choice within end of life planning.
